Buford is a small town in Georgia. It is the county seat of Fulton County and the only city in the county. The population was 9,953 at the 2010 census. The name Buford comes from an Altamont cattle post house, which was located near present-day Buford on the Chattahoochee River. Buford was founded by settlers from Tennessee in 1821 as a trading post on the Chattahoochee River. In 1825, it became a town and began to grow. By 1840, it had a population of 10,000 people. The cotton industry played a very important role in Buford's growth during the 19th century. A large cotton gin was built here in 1846 and operated until 1903. When that plant closed, Buford's largest employer was its local agricultural sector which produced corn, soybeans, rice, vegetables and other crops until World War II when factories began to take over operations here. Today, Buford remains an agricultural community with some manufacturing activity also taking place including some aluminum production onetime done by companies such as Alcoa and GEICO outside of downtown while most jobs have shifted to service sectors like health care or education inside of downtown since 2000 when Interstate 5 bypassed town center and new housing developments were built closer to I-5 making job opportunities more difficult to find within walking distance of any business or services that might be needed for day-to-day living purposes like grocery shopping or filling prescriptions etc...

The land that would become Buford was first settled by Europeans in 1795 as part of the Compromise of 1801 between America's two major slaveholding countries – Great Britain and France – which allowed Africans to be transported across the ocean for labor on American soil. The area now comprising Buford was also part of what was then called Cherokee Nation until it became an U.S. state in 1907. Buford began as a small community on a bend in the Chattahoochee River where farmers formed families and raised crops until railroads arrived in 1857 and transportation became available for more people and goods than could be grown or hauled by horse or wagon. By 1870, when construction started on Peachtree Road (now Highway 5), cotton had become America's leading crop with textiles becoming an important industry based on low prices for raw materials brought overland from Asia Minor and other parts of Europe while manufacturing increased production in larger cities such as New York City, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Baltimore etc., creating new employment opportunities for African Americans throughout southern Georgia during this period. The townspeople were able to enjoy some quality education before joining forces with nearby Marietta to form their own town government in 1881 following passage of A bill entitled "An act to establish a town government within limits assigned unto it" signed by Governor John Jealous which divided Fulton County into townships with one vote each among residents who were answerable only to their respective township committees rather than elected officials from outside their township boundaries providing municipal services like firefighting or zoning regulationshooting that still are provided today through special districts located within each municipality electing commissioners who must pass muster once every four years before being seated at meetings held monthly; these meetings were originally called "town meeting", but since 1922 they have been known as "municipal meeting".
