In the early 1900s, Buford became known for its firearms industry. He developed and marketed a number of rifles and shotguns, including the first ever rifle to be made in what is now Georgia. In the 1940s, World War II brought about a surge in demand for self Defense weapons in America. The Buford Arms Company began producing handguns, shotguns and other weaponry for military use. The company continued to produce these products until the late 1990s.
Buford, Georgia is a town in and the county seat of Buford County, Georgia. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Chattahoochee River near its confluence with the river's tributary the Ocmulgee River. The first permanent settler in what is now Buford County was Nicholas Cowan in 1808. In 1814, James Wofford arrived from England and founded an estate called Woffordsville on the south side of Chattahoochee River. A year later, John Lewis purchased land east of modern-day Buford from Cowan for $10 per acre. In 1817, two settlers named George and David Dixon established a log cabin on what is now White Street in downtown Buford. They were followed by other pioneers over the next few years until all but one settler had left for various reasons or had died before arriving in what would become Buford County. In 1830, Cherokee Nation leader Georgia General Andrew Jackson visited what is now Buford County and ordered all Cherokee citizens to leave because he felt they were taking too much land from his people without giving compensation. The only Cherokee who remained were those living within their own reservation east of present day Cobb County; these people managed to remain legal residents of their own country even though they could not vote or hold office inside it. In 1835, John Wesley Sellers organized some farmers into a company to purchase 2 acres (0 km²) north of where White Street meets I-20/ GA 224 today for $7 per acre (240 m²). This site became known as Sellers' Ferry Landing after him and his family built a ferry there which ferried trade goods across the Chattahoochee River between Atlanta and Chattanooga during this time period. The landing served as a stopping point for travelers journeying along I-20/GA 224 until about 1840 when it closed due to rising costs associated with traveling crosscountry by Commercial Railroad through that area at that time instead of using water transportation like then existing ferries which would have allowed travelers to connect different townships more easily including ones such as Chattanooga geographically close by while still being able to visit other parts of central Tennessee at lower cost than travelling via road trip across state lines then available! For many years following this event little has been done about improving or restoring this important stop however recent excavations adjacent to current day Sellers Ferry Landing have revealed evidence that this stop may have been significantly older than previously thought! Buford experienced significant growth starting around 1860 when Ware Shoals Dam was completed just upstream from town Limits making irrigation possible throughout much of northeast Alabama including parts of central Georgia northward into Ohio & Indiana etc.. This greatly increased crop production & wealth within town limits helped spur further development especially thanks to marble quarrying soon becoming an important component within town’s economy along with manufacturing plants opened up nearby such as cotton ginners etc.. Buford, Georgia is a small town in the state of Georgia. The population was 3,693 at the 2000 census. It is located in McIntosh County. Buford was founded in 1821 by General James Hance and named for Colonel Augustus Buford, an American Revolutionary War hero. The first settler in what is now Buford was Elijah McCoy who arrived on horseback from Tennessee in 1824. He named his property "McCoy's Ferry" after himself and his father-in-law, Daniel McCoy. commercial activity began with the opening of the first store on August 17th, 1830 by Elisha Brownell. The town developed rapidly due to its location and natural resources: logging, farming, fishing and hunting were some of its early industries. In 1834 William Jeter organized a Methodist church which became one of the largest churches in eastern Georgia and helped revive growth in Buford. In 1865 Union troops burned down part of the courthouse which caused much consternation among the citizens but also provided funds for rebuilding that year. The following year saw another boom time when construction resumed on Ft Capital (later Fort Worth) Navy Yard which would become one of Atlanta's main economic engines during World War II; however, due to budgetary shortfalls FortCapital closed shortly thereafter and had little impact on local economy or development thereafter One hallmark of postwar period redevelopment was increased focus on education as key to promoting self-reliance within a newly industrializing society; this trend continued into the 1960s as city services became more centralized while private enterprise grew increasingly important; nevertheless many small businesses still thrived until eventually market forces overwhelmed them over time During most recent decades there has been steady decline as well as gentrification throughout much of downtown including adjacent portions of McGowan Heights (the oldest section). This has led to increased traffic congestion and blighting around many historic buildings along with displacement rates exceeding 100%.
