In 1884, a company was formed by two men named John Dillard and Augustus Curry to produce rifle stocks for eastern dealers. This company became known as the Jardine Rifle Works and eventually produced millions of dollars worth of riflestocks throughout its empire. By 1865, the population had decreased to around 100 people due to the American Civil War. In 1870, Buford merged with neighboring Lawrenceville to form one municipality. The merger failed because of differences over property rights and governance. In 1991, Buford became part of the new city of Athens after it wasmerged from Lawrenceville. In 2000, Athens annexed parts of neighbouring Muscogee County into the city limits. As a result of these annexation movements, Buford's population decreased from 2,000 to 100 people. Buford is located at 33°14′48″N 82°2′38″W / 33.29° N 82.59° W / -82.59; it has an elevation of 403 feet (142 m). The climate in this area is considered humid subtropical with average high temperatures between 22 and 28 degrees Celsius during summer months and lows below 10 degrees Celsius most winter months; however there is some occasional frosty behavior during extreme weather events such as severe thunderstorms or hurricanes
