Buford, Georgia is a city in the US state of Georgia. The population was 497 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the Chattahoochee River and has been called "the most important cultural center in Atlanta". It is home to the Buford Arts Center and Buford Community College. Buford was founded by John C. Buford in 1819 as a small trading post on the Chattahoochee River. By 1830, it had become a town with a flour mill, farmsteads, and schoolhouse. In 1835, Buford Academy was founded as a preparatory school for the University of Georgia. In 1886, Buford became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and four commissioners. From 1902 until 1949, it was part of Fulton County; after that it became part of Cobb County. In 1963, when Atlanta annexed portions of Cobb County to form its new urban area, Buford formed an enclave within that area known as "The Annex" which included parts of Dunwoody, Roswell Park-Sandy Springs-Dunwoody Junction and other rural areas outside the central business district (CBD). Today "The Annex" consists only of some houses from what used to be its eastern edge: along 20th Street between Peachtree Road and Interstate 5 Exit 169A (a freeway exit), Decatur Road east of Peachtree Road extending south into Sandy Springs proper just past Indian Creek Elementary School before terminating at Pee Dee Avenue; these boundaries are largely unchanged since then despite changes in commercial zoning withinAtlanta proper." The first people who lived in what is now Buford were Native Americans who hunted game near present-day Mount Vernon and Augustaio Heights sites early in history. European exploration began withCaptain John Smith's voyage through this region on his ill-fated Discovery Expedition in 1607–08: he sighted "a great many houses" but no people—the first indication that land beyond present-day Georgia may have been discovered by human beings as early as 500 BC! By 1730 mention had been made by planter James Oglethorpeof an area bounded by Weldon Creek on the south; Squirrel Branch on the west; Glynn County line on the north (this would later become known as Floyd County); and Precinct 5 from which all future precincts were allotted (and still are!). In 1788 Lieutenant Colonel George Rogers Clark surveyed what today is downtown Buford while encamped at Fort Troup along our present-day Chattahoochee Riverbank., His map shows that he included within his boundaries what are now eastern Fulton and western Gwinnett Counties – including much of downtown now called “Old Town” – although he did not name or note any particular city site there! In 1789 Captain Phillips' three ships carrying back supplies from South America anchored at Pee Dee Island northeast of modern day Savannah before continuing their journey upriver past Passamaquoddy Bay without sighting anything worthwhile ashore! And so finally we humans met those incredibly intelligent Arawakan natives whom we soon dubbed “Gullah” because they could understand our language! So when British forces burned down Fort Moultrie opposite Savannah Harbor during Indian Wars era 1775-77 efforts were made by local inhabitants to rebuild using materials brought overland via canoe from various sources.. .Today you can find several places where Lt Col Clark left items behind such as Government House Museum across from courthouse square inside old jail building steps remains of Blacksmith shop &c 4 blocks NW corner main street between courthouse & Masonic temple . .There also appears to be remnants/trace evidence remaining today outside old Courthouse Square next to Interstate 285 just off busy US Highway 1 adjacent IHwy 285 exit serving Asheville Rd First Nation Tribal Casino During World War II large amounts of cotton were produced here including Mobile Army Air Force Base airfield being built nearby which served untilactivated in 1945 After World War II many new homes were built here such as Dunwoody Homes Estates development nears Busch Gardens park which opened in 1951 control center for USAF Eighth Air Force flying units during Cold War era In 1972 construction began on Merryweather Park shopping mall which opened later that year adjacent homebuilders Regency subdivision now known as Microsoft Place Downtown business district grew rapidly with numerous highrise buildings constructed here such as Metro Tower Now part Of Marriott Marquis Hotel complex dating back To 1966 when project started
