Buford is a city in central Georgia and the county seat of Buford County. The population was 45,261 at the 2000 census. It is the largest city in Buford County by population. The first people to live in what is now Buford were the Creek Indians who hunted and fished in the area for centuries. In 1802, Colonel John Smith established a post office here, which he named "Buford". Smith's post office was located on a bluff overlooking the Chattahoochee River. In 1860, General James Hogg's army invaded Georgia and resulted in the Battle of Bull Run (17 July 1861). Here, General Hogg's forces clashed with Confederate troops led by Generals Robert Ewell and Nathan Bedford Forrest. The battle ended with Union victory and Hogg was captured. In 1870, an act was passed to establish a new county called "Buford" within Grayson County. The original land for this new county had been donated by Captain David Dudley Johnston of Atlanta; it included present-day Buford Township as well as parts of Johnson, LaGrange and Lumpkin counties. When founded, Buford had a population of only 10 people. The city of Buford was incorporated on December 3, 1886 from part of Clarke County adjacent to present day Lumpkin County line east of Interstate 20/Highway 278/Upson Street. At that time it contained just over one hundred residents and consisted mostly of farmers living on large tracts near water supplies or along railroad lines providing access to markets outside their communities. One early development around town took place when Wabash Paper Company built a sawmill on Big Creek downstream from downtown during 1889-90 while they were still building mills upstream due to flooding caused by heavy rains that year associated with late winter freeze-over events across much of Alabama & Georgia
