Buford is a city in Troup County, Georgia, United States. The population was 8,795 at the 2010 census. The Buford Historic District is a National Register of Historic Places listed district that includes the central business district of the city and its surrounding rural areas. The Buford area has been inhabited since pre-historic times. It was known as "Tugaloo" by the Cherokee and "Buhkdoo" by the Creek. A post office was established at Buford in 1819, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1881, land purchases made by James Easley led to construction of what would become Atlanta's first telephone exchange, located on Fourth Street near downtown. In 1901–02, phosphate mining began on nearby Mount Pleasant Hill; this led to increased demand for water supplies and wellhead development around Buford City Hall and other municipal buildings. By 1907, however, mining had ended, replaced by agriculture as the primary economic activity in the area. During World War II, many local businesses became involved with manufacturing munitions or supplying food for military operations overseas; among these were Wernher Hays' Central Manufacturing Company (later Hays Industries), which manufactured ammunition and aircraft parts throughout much of Southeast Asia; Piedmont Steel Works (now Piedmont Coal) built mills north of town to produce coal for power plants across North Carolina; and Southern Broadcasting Corporation leased broadcast facilities from RCA Victor in 1942 to create southern radio stations including WRAL-TV (NBC), WCKY-TV (ABC), KRLD-TV (FOX) – all now defunct – as part of American Red Cross relief efforts during World War II. After hostilities ceased in 1945 following Japan's surrender, many local businesses closed down or evolved into new enterprises such as textile mills or retail stores catering to postwar Reconstruction era residents who returned home from war zones such as Japan and Korea. In 1951–53 plans were developed for an expressway through downtown that would have included a interchange with Interstate 95 west of town; however these plans were never realized because they conflicted with highway widening projects being undertaken at that time within Troup County along I-95 Spur instead. A major controversy erupted over plans to build a new high school adjacent to downtown due to concerns about traffic impacts on adjoining residential neighborhoods; ultimately this issue was resolved when it was determined that no new school would be built while alternative educational opportunities were available within walking distance of existing schools elsewhere in town
