Buford is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 12,362 at the 2010 census. Buford is the largest city in the metro area of Atlanta and one of its five municipalities. It is also home to The University of Southern Georgia and Toomer's Corner, a shopping center with more than 350 stores. The antebellum community that now includes Buford was founded by Josephine (Josie) McFadden on land purchased from the Cherokee Nation in 1835. The town sprang up rapidly due to Fadden's sugar plantation business and cotton plantations located along the Chattahoochee River, which made it a convenient location for merchants and travelers wanting to reach Mobile orJacksonville. A post office was established at Buford in 1836, but no residents moved there until 1840 when James Witherspoon set up shop here as an importer/exporter of goods related to salt cow crop production on his plantation near Dahlonega. By 1849, McFadden had sold her interest in her estate to Jno Pritchard who leased it back to McFadden's heirs for $1 per year until they paid off the lease; this arrangement continued until 1892 when it reverted back to Pritchard's heirs under an agreement between him and local attorney General John Akinsworth Sr.. In 1861, Confederate soldier Colman Brown settled here after fleeing from Fort Sumter during Union occupation of southernGeorgia; he developed what is now known as Brownstown into a small town with about 100 residents prior to his death in 1865. When Atlanta became an city in 1895 following incorporation by act of Congress under state law – separate from Fulton County – Buford became one of its earliest inhabitants because its location made it easy for businesses and people associated with Atlanta to get involved in local politics and commerce. AsAtlanta grew increasingly diverse over time including African Americans becoming prosperous professionals and entrepreneurs their presence beganto be noticed by white leaders such as Mayor George Wallace who hoped that attracting these new demographics would create stability withinAtlanta while alienating black Atlantans who felt left out of decision-making processes.
