Buford was founded by John Kirby Buford in 1827 as a stagecoach stop on his route from Savannah to Macon. In 1865, General Nathan Bedford Forrest created an independent Confederate state within Georgia known as Fayetteville County and located Buford within it. After Confederate forces were routed in October 1866 by Union forces under General Sherman, many of the town's black residents fled north to Chattanooga, Tennessee. Black men returned to Buford in 1870 when cotton prices improved and began working on plantations again; they formed a second generation of African Americans who continue to live there today. In 1903, president Theodore Roosevelt created what would become known as Chattahoochee National Forest near Buford in order to provide recreational opportunities for people living in Atlanta and its vicinity. When he visited Atlanta that year, Roosevelt designated much of Chattahoochee National Forest as parkland west of downtown Atlanta for public use with hunting privileges available only to members of certain organizations such as Riflemen’s Order No 1 (Rifles), Scoutmasters Association (Scouts), United Daughters Auxiliary (UDA) ambulance corps paramedics/firefighters/EMTs—the first civilian firefighters* in America—and their families. The following year Congress appropriated $5 million for acquisition and improvement purposes over 10 years for all national forests managed by USDA including Chattahoochee National Forest which became fully operational on July 16, 1916 with 541 employees*. Today over 21 million people visit Chattahoochee National Forest each year*. Today's economy relies heavily upon agriculture although there are some small businesses operating within town limits that do not rely exclusively upon agriculture products such as grocery stores or hardware stores; these businesses are typically services such as home maintenance or lawn care while also providing tourist information about local attractions
