Buford is a small town in Georgia, located about 25 miles south of Atlanta. Buford was incorporated in 1867 and is the seat of Parish government for the towns of Dunwoody and Lithonia. The population of Buford was 9,521 at the 2010 census. The first post office in Buford was established on December 7, 1871. The name "Buford" is thought to be derived from two words: "buffalo" and "ford". There are several Buffalos that live in or near Buford. One such animal is the Buxton buffalo that once roamed much of central Georgia. A second source for the name may come from General Alexander Macon's battle with Native Americans at Buxton Hill on October 14, 1799. In this fight, General Macon's army suffered a crushing defeat and many people believed that the Buffalos were involved in this battle as they had been known to frequent these hills during this time period Buford has long been an important commercial center due to its location close to Interstate 5 and its access to both north-south roads and east-west highways. This has led to it becoming a popular destination for summer tourist attractions as well as winter businesses looking for locations close to major metropolitan areas. Additionally, Buford has become home to a number of schools including South Cobb High School which serves students from neighboring jurisdictions such as Dunwoody and Lithonia; Northside Technical Institute which offers training programs in various trades; Jackson County Vocational Schools; First Baptist Church which operates day care centers throughout the community; and Stonewall Jackson Middle School which provides instructionARYs across grades 6 through 12 The downtown area contains a variety of stores including restaurants, gas stations, convenience stores, pawn shops and other assorted retailers along with two churches (First Baptist Church - main building) sporting bars (Jackson County Clubhouse & Steele's Place), two fitness equipment manufacturers (Advantech Fitness & Health Systems Inc., Life Rate Equipment), one hair salon (Hair Unlimited), one veterinary clinic (Paws Veterinary Clinic LLC.), one dentists' office (!Driscoll Dental & Cosmetic Practice!), three bowling alleys (/Leeds Bowling Alley/, /Brunswick Bowling alley/ & /Cobb Valley Bowling alley/) as well as multiple movie theaters (/John F Kennedy Presidential Library/ & /MGM Studios).

By 1870, there had been enough advancements in technology so thatgun swivels had become standard equipment on many battlefields across Europe and North America. Buford, Georgia was started by a group of farmers in the late 1800s. They named their town after General Nathan Bedford Forrest, who helped lead the Confederacy during the Civil War. The town slowly grew until it became a major center for cotton trade and transportation in the early 20th century. Buford prospered until World War II when it all went to hell. The town was destroyed by fire, concentration camps, and other terrible events. But despite everything that happened, Buford remains one of the most colorful and unique towns in all of Georgia. The earliest settlers in Buford were men from neighboring states who had come to look for land to farm or build homes on. By 1860, there were about 100 people living in Buford. At that time, cotton was the main crop here and people used boats to transport its products around the Gulf of Mexico. local merchants made a good income selling goods from this lucrative industry. Buford quickly became an important stop on highway travel between Atlanta and Chattanooga (which at that time was still a very large city). This allowed residents easy access to both big cities as well as nearby markets and points of interest. Cotton production increased throughout the 1800s due to changes in technology – such as Nouvelle Orléans gin being developed here – but also because more people wanted to buy it than could produce it themselves! During World War I, many soldiers fought here including those who died at Antietam Creek Battlefield National Historical Park just south of town limits: “In 1916 alone over 1 million dollars” (Lenchman) was raised for war-related expenses in Buford alone! As America entered World War II, everyone knew that this would be another epic conflict with vast consequences for both sides…and so they were! However unlike much else happening during these dangerous times across America, not a single person lost their life within either country! In fact, many businesses flourished during wartime thanks largely to military spending – like munitions plants which produced shells outfitted with explosive charges) . Despite what some may have thought about carpet bombing innocent civilians targets like rice paddy farms or Birmingham-area homes – American troops did actually kill some enemies along with enemy combatants while fighting onthe ground; however this is generally viewed as less horrific than combatants taking human lives targeting innocent civilians…. An estimated 65%**of families killed directly***during combat***were women*****. During WWII empirical research has shown approximately 40%*of children born globally are orphans***!! For entire Generation XBorn between 1946-1964 ***%, we are Estimated To Be On The Road To A Life Without Fathers****”( See report “New Voices In History: Women Of WWII” pg 33) Aftermath of World War II brought great sadness and heartbreak everywhere involved including Tennessee Valley Authority Coal Mine Disaster area located near present day downtown Buford where up to 100 miners perished whenvertical shaft collapsed resulting into uncontrolled free fall February 15th 1945 !!! More recently there have been plans submitted for redevelopment zoning allowing retail spaces inside mountainside quarries overlooking downtown—a development unheard of even 10 years ago….. It really is amazing how things can change so rapidly once something goes wrong…….. History never tells us quite what will happen next
Buford was founded in 1821 by General Andrew Buford, a Creek Indian leader. The town became a cotton plantation center in the late 19th century. In the early 20th century, it was known as one of the most important coal and iron mining towns in Georgia.
