Buford, Georgia is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 34,451 at the 2010 census. It is Greater Atlanta's second-largest city after Atlanta and its economic center. Buford was founded by General James Emory Buford in 1824 as a trading post on the Chattahoochee River. In 1827, he named it for him, James Emory Buford, Jr., who had been heroically killed during the American Civil War at the Battle of Chickamauga. The town prospered until the turn of the 20th century when cotton production collapsed in what became known as "the Great Depression". After World War II, Buford grew rapidly because of its location within easy commuting distance of bothAtlanta and metropolitan Nashville. However, this prosperity ended with suburban development around downtown and a lack of job opportunities for workers in new factories built near I-75 and I-285. Although many people continue to live in Buford today, it is also an important commercial center for north Fulton County and parts of northwest Alabama

Buford is located on the east side of the Chattahoochee River and has a land area of just under square miles (1 km²). Neighboring towns are Midtown Atlanta and Sandy Springs to the south, Stone Mountain to the west and Roswell to the northwest. The river forms most of Buford's boundaries; it flows through town but does not touch it physically. The first European settlers in what is now Buford were Methodists from North Carolina who arrived in 1793. They built a log church and started a school in 1798 which became known as Christmastime Academy. In 1824, General Nathan Bedford Forrest founded an academy here that became one of America's leading military academies for black soldiers. After World War II, when all black schools were closed by order of white parents because they did not want their children attending white schools, Buford Academy reopened as an all-black school before being shuttered again in 1970s due to financial difficulties brought about by integration efforts across Fulton County government

Buford experienced significant growth during World War I when ammunition production increased along with military activity in neighboring states such as Alabama and Georgia; however, following World War II it experienced declines again until becoming one ofAlabama's poorest cities in 1990 with 10% unemployment rate according to US Census Bureau report). Today it is one ofAlabama's fastest-growing cities with 5% annual growth rate since 2000 according to US Census Bureau report) due largely to professional job growth within its healthcare industry (it has become one ofthe state's top medical destinations) as well as new apartment development (mainly located near downtown).
