Buford is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Buford was founded in 1820 and named for General James Buford, an American hero who fought in the Mexican–American War. The first settler in what would become Buford was John Aiken. He built a cabin on a hill overlooking the town in 1822. In 1824, Aiken married Sarah Newell and they started to cultivate land around their cabin. In 1830, John Newton purchased some of Aiken's land and moved his family to what would become Buford. Newton had three children: Isaac Newton (1831-1905), Samuel Newton (1833-1910) and Hannah Newton (1835-1900). Newton acquired additional land over time including most of present day downtown Buford from other owners - primarily Andrew Stevenson, who bought it from him in 1851; Elisha Steenheimer (born 1840), who bought it from him c 1870; Charles Wray(1846-1920), who bought it from him c 1880; and Edward Mclntyre(1850-1937), who purchased it from him c 1890. One result of these acquisitions was that downtown Buford became mostly one block wide with several blocks east or west of that limit developed into new neighborhoods such as Prospect Park West, Midtown South and Stone Mountain Park East which are still very much alive today! The first school located within the limits of today's downtown Buford was dedicated on December 12th, 1830 by Drs Jno Cate & Ebenezer Bowen Sr., trustees of Griggs Female Seminary #2 located on Second Street between River Road & Peachtree Road just east of where Broadway now intersects River Road! The new building which replaced an earlier log structure served grades 1 through 8 until September 15th 1865 when classes were relocated to Paulding Academy which became Griggs Female Seminary #1 on October 5th 1865! From there instruction continued until November 30th 1965 when grades 9 through 12 were transferred to Chilton School which became Griggs Male Seminary #2!!!!!!! After much discussion among trustees Moses Greer & Elijah Hillman decided that Griggs Male Seminary #3 should be established adjacent to Chilton School so Classes began January 6th 1926 thru Febuary 7 th 1928’!!!!! This left us with only female students attending schoolsinderinstructions untilAugust 3rd 1949 when Girls High School opened!!!!!

Buford and his men who fought in the American Civil War. The town was founded in 1836 by John Waddell and others from Alabama as a station on the Chilton Road between Athens and Decatur. It became an important trading center for farmers around the area and prospered until the early 20th century when railroads came to town and destroyed most of its business activity. In 1916, General William Tecumseh Sherman ordered all Confederate troops captured in Georgia to be sent to Processing Center at Folsom Prison near Sacramento, California where they were used as labor for construction projects including Antietam Battlefield National Military Park. Buford has experienced slow growth over the years but some new development has been initiated recently including a housing development called Riverwalk which overlooks the Chattahoochee River.
