Buford was first settled by the Cherokee in 1802. The town was named for General James Buford, a American general who fought in the Mexican-American War and against Seminoles. In 1835, General Nathan Bedford Forrest moved his army through Georgia to attack Mobile Bay and Fort Gaines on the Tennessee border. While marching through central Georgia, Forrest discovered a group of white farmers living near what is now Buford. Forrest ordered his men to burn their homes and crops as reprisal for what he saw as slighted treatment by the settlers. This began what would be known as the western Indian Wars. The town grew rapidly during Reconstruction following World War II and reached its peak in population in 1950 with 1,500 residents. However, growth slowed after that decade as outside interests took over many of Buford's businesses and residences. In recent years, much attention has been focused on efforts to save Fort Gaines National Battlefield which lies within city limits but is managed by federal government property management staff nonetheless due to its historical importance as an important stop on both Confederate Routes 66 and 71 west of Chattanooga during Sherman's march across Alabama in 1865.
Buford was founded in 1795 by General James Robertson Buford. The city was named for him and it became a center of cotton production in the area. In 1837, Buford was made the seat of government for Lookout County, Georgia. It was during this time that the city began to become known as a cultural center for the region. In 1870, Buford became an incorporated municipality and it soon emerged as a major transportation hub in the area. In 1924, the city annexed neighboring towns of Wellston and Stone Mountain and its population grew to over 100,000 people by 1950.Today, Buford is home to many businesses and organizations including The University at Chattanooga (UAC), which is one of America's most prestigious universities; Hartsfield-Jackson Airport; Chattahoochee Valley NHS Medical Center; First Baptist Church; and several schools including Southeast Technical College/MBA School of Business Administration and Lookout Valley Community College/Vietnamese Studies Department
