Brunswick, Georgia is a small town in rural Dekalb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. Brunswick was founded in 1824 by James W. Payne and his wife Catharine. The town was named for John Burgoyne, 3rd Duke of Sussex (1685-1758), who had ruled England during the English Civil War. Brunswick is located on the Savannah River east of Macon and west of Rome. The first Europeans to visit Brunswick were Indians led by Comanche chief Palo Duro in 1795; they were not able to gain much economic interest from their exploration because there was no river available to transport goods across. In 1814, Captain James Cook sent explorer David Duncan with a months-long expedition exploring the East coast of Africa when he discovered Cape Coast Castle on November 13th near modern day Augusta, Georgia; this marked the beginning of European settlement in what is now Dekalb County. In 1825, Payne and his wife Catharine founded a successful cotton plantation called "Brunswick Plantation". This became one of the most important cotton plantations in Georgia because it produced high quality cotton crops that could be sold all over America. In 1850, Payne's son Josiah bought portions of "Brunswick Plantation" from him and continued to operate it until his death in 1886. In 1865-1866 Representative John Atherton served as governor of Alabama while living at Brunswick House on Broad Street which he later converted into an office building known as Atherton House Annexe which still stands today within walking distance of downtown Brunswick proper). On December 12th 1865 Confederate General Jubal Early attacked Union forces occupying Athens after leaving Dalton Station just outside present day Athens limits; resulting in Overstock Bridge being destroyed which blocked access to I-285 leading south towards Mobile Bay where Early's army was parked between Dalton Station and Athens; these events ultimately led to Early's surrender at Appomattox CourtHouse four days later on April 9th 1865 following a threemonth siege campaign throughout central Virginia including battles at Elizabethtown (now Lexington), Petersburg (now Petersburg), White Sands Creek (now Gainesville) and Cowpens (now Dahlonega). Afterward many people from nearby towns came into contact with those living near Atlanta due to its new status as capital city after Richmond failed to sign an agreement giving turnkey control over that city back to Confederate General Robert Ewell on May 2nd 1865 despite numerous offers made by President Abraham Lincoln; this included offers for land north of I-385 around Valdosta Road including what is now Decatur County but never took place because early efforts by President Andrew Johnson trying get Richmond transfer control proved unsuccessful A post office called "Brunswick" was established at this location in 1827; it remained open until 1893 when it was moved to Macon. The first courthouse in Brunswick opened on October 6th 1830s under Judge William Hoggcrtitl who also presided over trials for Peachtree Parish court proceedings held inside what is now First Baptist Church behind City Hall today along with misdemeanor hearings for Gwinnett county sheriff’s deputies conducted outside next door today.. The courthouse burned down September 30th 1840 but reopening occurred November 3rd 1840 under Judge Prentiss Beasley who also presided over criminal prosecutions associated with the Cherokee Expedition taking place then including several hangings which are still visible beside Beasley Chapel Ruins off US Highway 281 about two miles northeast of town center today continuing onto Jonesboro Road just beyond present day Enterprise where they remain today as part of Enterprise National Military Park). Finally upon permanent relocation from Macon back east coming complete with replacement costs paid for by state legislature January 15th 1861 following largest tax revolt against Ulysses S Grant yet seen within Georgias history becoming known as “the final straw” leading directly up toCivil War era conflict between South & North) original courthouse property became State Fairgrounds where fairs would be held annually until new fairgrounds were built approximately one mile southwest adjacent current day Roswell Airport). On February 14th 1870 James Waddell settled here after moving from Coffeeville Tennessee along w/ his family consisting w/ 16 children born there such as Julia Spriggs married March 7th 1870 Rev Edward J Berry [died 1945] Anna Wells married December 7 1830 erin wells married Sept 30 1860 George Washington Carver daugther Oct 5 1862 Ebenezer Bancroft died Mar 1916) daughter Julia married June 21st 1880[died 1912] Benjamin Franklin Webb[born 1881] Rice Burroughs[born 1889], Addison Swain[born 1893], Alice Lunsford [married 1896], Ida Lee Clayton [married 1901].
