The first firearms were created in the early 1700s in what is now Brunswick, Georgia. In 1733, a man named Nicholas Rowe designed and built the first gun swivel. This early armament trade led to Brunswick becoming one of the most important arms manufacturing centers in southeastern United States during the antebellum period. From 1830 until 1850s when Interstate Highway System expansion ended at Gulfport Bayou into Mississippi Territory (Alabama), following US routes Tallahassee – Mobile – Pensacola – Tampa – St Petersburg – Clearwater etc., Brunswick remained an important transportation hub for cotton traders travelling between Mobile Bayou and points east across central Floridas including Jacksonville and Enterprise along with shipping outbound barrels filled with saltpeter mined near Cuba’s Key West which formed what would become known “Quester” lead minefields off First Coast beachlines
