Brunswick was founded in 1824 and named for English Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, who had married the daughter of General Andrew Jackson. The first post office in Brunswick was established on December 1, 1825. The town was incorporated on April 14, 1829. In 1860 it became part of Cobb County and became known as "Brunswick Heights". On October 25, 1870 it merged with the neighboring town of Dunwoody to form what is now known as Dunwoody–Brunswick Combined Statistical Area. It lost its charter as a city on July 1, 1974 when its boundaries were changed by the Georgia General Assembly to include all of Fulton County except for the unincorporated communities of Stockbridge and Decatur. In 1909 Brunswick began construction of Terminal Island Airport which served as an important link between Atlanta and Savannah. The airport closed in 1970 but portions were used as a military airfield until it was converted into an open-air recreation area called Terminal Park during the late 1990s and 2000s. Today parts of Terminal Island are also home to several large malls including one near downtown called MARTA Station Square mall which anchors nearby Interstate 95/US Highway 153 interchange The history of early development in Brunswick can be traced back to 1824 when English Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg (later King George III) married Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Mallory (daughter of John Stuart Mallory). As part of his dowry Elizabeth donated land for settlement westward from Charleston via Marietta Creek across from present day Dunwoody Avenue and what is now Southside Boulevard SW & US Primary Road NW in today's downtown core - this area remains known locally simply as "Elizabethtown." From this initial community growth grew commerce; agriculture; manufacturing; politics; education; music – even though much progress had yet to be made due mainly to lack thereof: funds not available or transportation limitations resulting from wars with France & Spain throughout much preceding America’s infancy such that schoolrooms did not exist until after 1800 while churches only commenced operations after 1792! Notwithstanding these setbacks many brave men & women continued along side their dreams despite great odds setting before them such that by 1830 most Georgians under age 50 could read & write! A few weeks later James Cook sailed into harbor off Savannah Harbor containing HMS Beagle RN becoming first foreigner ever ashore within American shores marking “the opening up [of] our system [of] government” thereby inaugurating over 200 years successive progressivism leading eventually up to current day occupants! This occurred just prior 2 days prior 100 yr anniversary celebration date mentioned supra commemorative plaque still stands atop nearby Albany tower visible from interstate 95 junction 10 minutes drive south east driving direction away
