Brunswick is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 27,491 at the 2010 census. Brunswick has been part of the Atlanta metropolitan area since 1997. It is the county seat of Fulton County and home to much of the city's cultural and economic activity. The first permanent European settlers were Englishmen who arrived in 1784 as part of a group led by General James Wilkinson. They named their new community "Brunswick" after Lord George Berkeley's estates in England where they had been living for some time before that. In 1802, a smallpox epidemic killed many people in what is now downtown Brunswick and nearby areas. As a result, the British town manager recommended that the citizens move away from what was then known as "the sickly town". The original buildings still stand today – including the old courthouse which was replaced in 1913 by the current structure – but most of Brunswick's present day development took place after World War II when it became an important airbase for NATO and other defense activities. In 1896, brothers John Fenton (1851-1924) and Abram Fenton (1856-1937) founded JF Enterprises which became one of America's largest textile companies with mills located throughout North America In 1957 Brunswick established itself as an educational center with its own high school (now Dalton High School), two elementary schools (Pinecrest Elementary School and Springdale Elementary School), three middle schools (Everette Middle School, Woodlawn Middle School, and Sandy Springs Intermediate High School), four high schools (Dalton High Schools: James Worthy Harding Jr., Benjamin Easley Hayes III, Lilianna Ballard Moody Sr.), one Junior College (John Crampton Technical Institute), two hospitals -one Baptist Hospital which opened on October 1st 1915 under assumed name Augusta Hospital files alterations on November 8th 1915 renamed Gwinnett Medical Center upon acquisition by American Baptist Hospital Corporation later renamed Gwinnett Regional Medical Center -and one private hospital called Health Sciences One Hundred Associates which opened on December 15th 1955 as American Health Science Associates Inc.. Today there are only two structures remaining from those days - First Baptist Church History Museum & Library located at corner of Northwood Avenue & Clairmont Street Streets while Health Sciences One Hundred Associates building currently used by Southside Community Health System as their Clinic Building On January 1st 1944 during World War II Cumberland Air Force Base Camp Which spanned over 100 acres served military members stationed here including nearly 4000 personnel who lived within its perimeter plus families adjacent to base housing barracks tents stores kitchens mess hall chapel dispensary dispensary dispensary store health clinics ammunition dumps instrument labs vehicles nitrogen plant After World War II local businesses began to proliferate with several becoming nationally known such as Coca Cola Company , Ford Motor Division distributor Greer Lumber Co along with many others associated with early Industrial southcentral Georgia
The city of Brunswick was founded in 1814 by General James A. Macon and is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Georgia. The town was named after King George Washington, who had visited the area in 1786. In 1821, Brunswick became a part of the newly created state of Georgia and it has been a municipality since 1868.
