By 2000, however, some sections of downtown were still struggling with rundown buildings and limited access to essential services such as sewers and water systems. In response to these challenges, local officials began working on plans for what would become known as "The revitalization project." This plan called for extensive renovation of several key downtown buildings including The White House (now part of nearby Cobb Power Plant), State Capitol Building (now home to North Cobb Middle School), Federal Courthouse (now home to Georgian Hall), and Brunswick Municipal Hospital (now part of Abercrombie & Fitch). The revitalization project has seen mixed results; although many parts have been renovated or upgraded while others have not yet been completed due largely to financial constraints caused by continued low oil prices throughout much of 2014/2015. However, overall there is now an increased sense that Brunswick is back on track following several years where it lacked both physical presence and hope for future development. Brunswick has long been an important center for trade along the Chattahoochee River – first established when General James Wilkinson arrived here in 1802 – but its importance only increased during Reconstruction times when various businesses thrived thanks in large part to government contracts awarded during that time period.
