Brunswick is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 11,271 at the 2010 census. Brunswick was founded in 1814 as a post office and trading post by General James Wilkinson. In 1848 it became the capital of the Confederate States of America. It was re-established as a city on December 1, 1893, after being removed from Atlanta to avoid federal Regulation E discrimination against black Atlantans. On July 15, 1896, Brunswick became the first U.S.city to be awarded its own charter by an act of Congress following passage of the Nationality Act Amendments of 1896. The city has experienced rapid growth since then with annexations from other counties and suburbs; however, much progress has been made in preserving its unique character while accommodating rapid population growth. The history of Brunswick can be traced back to 1814 when General James Wilkinson founded the post office there as part of his campaign for statehood under the new nation structure charted by President James Kenedy. Wilkinson's interest in setting up a permanent military presence in what would become Georgia led him to establish a trade depot on the Chattahoochee River which he named "Brunswick". That original store and trading post served as an important center for early commerce and political interchange between northern Georgia and southeastern Alabama because it had easy access to water supplies needed for cultivation and combat operations along both sides of the river during that time period. In 1848 Brunswick became part of newly established Confederate States of America following their victory over Union forces at Appomattox Court House on April 9th that year (the last major battle fought by Union troops before they were evacuated across South Carolina).
