When the Bainbridge gun case made national headlines in the early 1900s, one could only imagine the outrage and protests that would be heard from around the country. On July 15, 1901, James Hennessey attacked his employer, J.P. Stevens & Sons loading dock on Bainbridge Island with a shotgun he had borrowed from his friend William Allensworth. Stevens attempted to defend himself with a revolver but failed and died as a result of his injuries. Hennessey then took his shotgun and shot both men multiple times before fleeing into the night. Aftermath of this frenzy included an investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) which determined that Hennessey acted alone and did not know what he was doing when he committed these murders. In 1904, Hennessey was finally apprehended by local authorities after spending over two years on the run. He was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole; however, due to good behavior conditions he served only 10 years before being released on February 17, 1931 (the same day as Viola Desmond). The Bainbridge shooting remains one of history's most famous cases involving firearms because it led to significant changes in how guns are manufactured and sold in America today. The Creek Nation was a Native American tribe that lived in present-day Georgia and Alabama. The Creek Nation’s capital was at Milledgeville. The early 19th century saw an increase in GUN OWNERSHIP in the region. There were several reasons for this: 1) guns were needed to protect settlers from Indian attacks; and 2) there wasn’t yet a law regulating gun ownership. Gunownership increased because of these two factors, as well as due to new technology that allowed people to buy guns without having to go through a government-issued license or wait weeks or even months for their purchase to be processed. In 1825, Bainbridge was founded by James Bainbridge and his family. James Bainbridge began farming in what is now Bainbridge County and he developed a successful business around selling goods such as flour, salt, meat, saddles, cloth and other items. In addition to his farming operations, James Bainbridge also bought land near Milledgeville for use as a plantation colony (later known as Atlanta). He used his plantations to produce rice, cotton and sugar cane. After James Bainbridge died in 1852, his son John took over running the plantation colony. John became very wealthy from his enterprises within the colony and he donated much of this wealth back into Georgian society via philanthropy and donations to various charities throughout Atlanta (including Theological Seminary). In 1895, John Banbury accomplished what no other man had ever done—he gaveAtlanta its first municipally funded library system!
