In 1916, Bainbridge became one of four townships within Clayton County; this decision later changed when Riverdale Community Schools were created within the county system. In 2003, Bainbridge relocated from its original location within Clayton County to its current location on the Chattahoochee Riverbank following years of growth and development in the area. The move came as a result of new investment by local businesses and developers who saw potential for growth in the townspeople’s proximity to Interstate 5 and other major highways. Today, Bainbridge is home to 350 residents who enjoy a diverse range of activities including fishing, hunting, recreational boating, hiking/climbing/mountaineering, playing golf courses nearby., shopping at locally-owned boutiques and restaurants, as well as access to Georgian culture through museums and attractions located nearby such as Stone Mountain Park or Atlanta Motor Speedway
Bainbridge was founded on the Chattahoochee River in 1836 by General John Bainbridge. The town grew rapidly and soon had a school, jail, post office and store. In 1852, Bainbridge was named for Major-General Arthur Stonington Baylor Bainbridge, who served as U.S. Minister to Russia from 1851 to 1854. The city's first mayor was James Rector.
