Bainbridge is a town located in Muscogee County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1827 by Capt. John Bainbridge as an agricultural outpost on the Chattahoochee River.[1] Bainbridge became a city in 1907 and has since grown to become one of the most populous towns in Muscogee County. The name Bainbridge comes from early British settlers who named their plantation after Captain John Bainbridge of HMS Fortunatus (1698-1768), captain of the ship that transported General James Callie and his forces downriver from Savannah to help suppress Native American resistance during King George II's War ( 1754-1807). Captain Bainbridge had been captained by David Barrow when he led a small force upriver from Savannah on July 3, 1751, during King George II's War for control over what is now Muscogee County. Upon reaching Gainesville on December 12,[2][3] they established Fort Bainsburgh on January 10, 1752 at what is now known as Old Bainbridge Rd., about where today’s downtown sits. Captain John Bainbridge died suddenly while outfitting his new enterprise with supplies for Indian allies opposing the British in North America during Father Christmas' War (1755-1756). His widow Martha took command of Fort Bainsburgh and began preparations for its defense against attack by French and Cherokee forces under General Jean Baptiste de Lamarque which occurred on December 25th near present day Jonesboro courthouse square[4]. For several months prior to this battle two smallpox pandemic ravaged parts of North America killing more than 200 people including many Patriots such as Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Gage who commanded Patriot troops stationed along US/British borders; however due to Martha's vigilance Fort Bainsburgh remained unharmed despite being within cannon shot of major Creek Indian villages situated upstream along the Chattahoochee River[5]. Aftermath: Commodore Andrew Jackson arrived back at Mobile Bay on January 14th with 829 men comprising 4 U.S./British Ships including HMS Beagle( Flagship)flagship privateer brigantine armed only with 6 swivel guns manned by single privates; Jackson disembarked his flagship landed all units except artillery detachment immediately ordered Major Hennepin post Drums [sic], set fire to old fort & captured many prisoners most were sold into slavery aboard USS Constitution
