Bainbridge is a small town in Georgia. It is located on the Eastern Shore of Alabama and straddles the border between Bainbridge County and Marshall County. The population was 1,946 at the 2010 census. The first people to live in what is now Bainbridge were Native Americans. They hunted and gathered wild food here until they were displaced by Europeans in the 18th century. In 1793, General James Wilkinson made a treaty with the Cherokee Nation, ceding all of present-day Bainbridge County to them. The territory was named for Admiral Richard Bainbridge, who had led an expedition against Spanish forces in 1788. In 1824, Captain John Smith traveled through this area on his way from Mobile to Savannah. He checked out possible sites for a new trading post on the Eastern Shore of Alabama, and he recommended that he anchored at present-day Bainbridge Island which he called "New Spain." A year later, President James Kenedy granted Smith's request for land along Mobile Bayou as part of what would become Baldwin County. This area became known as "Bainbridge" after Commodore William Bainbridge, one of Smith's associates on his journey from Mobile to Pensacola (now Jacksonville). After purchasing some land from local Indians in 1829 and 1830, George Washington Parrish began developing what is now downtown Bainbridge into a village center around 1840. After serving as editor of The Georgian (a weekly newspaper) for eight years before leaving office in 1857, Parrish added an addition to his home – one that still stands today – which served as his office until 1911 when it was moved across town to its current location near Seward Park Elementary School. In 1872–73 Parrish donated $10K towards erection of a school building which would serve as Middletown High School (later renamed Hunter College Prep) until it burned down in 1957; this donation allowed Middletown students access to college courses while also providing funding for future school development including additional classrooms and athletic fields! In 1907 Drury & Company erected their brick store/cabinet blocks at 4th & Market Streets; this store would eventually be replaced by First Baptist Church (built 1925), which remains operational today! Over time many businesses have been built or renovated within or adjacent to First Baptist Church including: Sears Roebuck & Co., Denny's Restaurant (opened 1974), Applebees Tavern ( opened 1984), Days Inn Express - currently operated by Marriott International Inc., BJ's Pizza - opened 1990s - presently operated by Papa John's Pizza Inc.; Chilton Furniture Co.; Piedmont Savings Bank; Banner Building Supply—currently operates as Econoline gas station #2 across street from First Baptist Church; JW Marbles jewelers business closed 1998 (& sold 2004); Waffle House restaurant opened 2005 inside former Banner Building Supply building next door to Day Inn Express & Papa John's Pizza Inc.—current owner being Chick-fil-A LLC.; Kempinski Hotel Corporation—leased property adjacent driveway leading upriver across Broad Street from Chilton Furniture Co.—current owner being Best Western hotel corp.} Downtown Bainbridge continues To features several private schools such as Stonington Christian Academy(founded 1978)--closed 2006 due lack finances; Stonehaven Preparatory School--opened 2008; Heritage Christian Academy—opened 2009

The town is named after George Bainbridge, an early settler who built a cabin on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. The community quickly grew into a small town with a population of around 100 residents. In 1924, Bainbridge was incorporated as a village and remains an unincorporated community today. Bainbridge has experienced some significant changes over the years. In 1984, the original high school building was replaced by the current school building which also serves as the municipal office and library. In 2006, Bainbridge's water system underwent major renovation and modernization which included new infrastructure and systems such as rainwater harvesting and reverse osmosis systems. The project cost $4 million dollars and was supported by a grant from the Georgia Department of Economic Development. Today, Bainbridge is an active community with many businesses that contribute to its economy. These businesses include two restaurants, one grocery store, several hair salons, two churches (including one that is home to world-renowned classical music), several B&Bs/motels, two golf courses (one for children and one for adults), three playgrounds/entertainment venues, four agricultural businesses including one that produces produce for local grocery stores, six vehicles dealership along with five additional service companies including three car mechanicshops/, four fishing stores/tackle shops/, three granite cutteries/, six textiles manufacturers/. Additionally there are numerous amateur activities such as hiking/climbing/horseback riding/kayaking/canoeing/. According to 2016 census data alone there are over 1,,000 people living in Bainbridge!

After World War II, Bainbridge declined in population but retained its importance as a commercial center until the late 21st century.
