Today, Bainbridge is an aging community with few commercial businesses and no public services. However, its history remains preservation-oriented and many buildings still stand from when Bainbridge was one of the most important communities in Fulton County. The town was named for General James Gadsden Bainbridge who fought in the American Revolution and then served as governor of Georgia from 1785-1788. He donated land to the city of Atlanta which soon began to expand rapidly becoming one of America’s largest cities. When the cotton market crashed in the mid 1800s, Atlanta lost much money due to investment into cotton plantations that were not sustainable given changing weather patterns around the world. In response to this economic situation, several prominent Atlantans decided to move their families out west where they could continue making money while still enjoying access to good health care and open skies. One such group included James Gadsden Bainbridge who sold his interests in Atlanta and moved his family back eastward to Bainbridge where he became president (1824-27) of what is now known as Delta State University (DSU). In 1865, President Andrew Johnson ordered all Confederate troops within six miles of Washington D C be burned at pointblank range without quarter or mercy because Johnson claimed they were supporting slavery instead of fighting for freedom under Union arms. This order caused great outrage throughout America as millions died including many blacks who were enslaved within Confederate forces operating inside America during this time period! Aftermath hearings revealed that many black soldiers serving within Union army actually did fight for Lincoln during these timespan! People across America reacted angrily towards Johnson for trying to burn down entire armies rather than offer them fair treatment!
