Bainbridge is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. Bainbridge was founded in 1851 by Major General James H. Bainbridge and his brother Commodore Samuel L. Bainbridge and is named after Major General James H. Baird's plantation on the Chattahoochee River in present-day Georgia. The first settler to arrive in what is now Bainbridge County was Captain John Forsyth of Savannah, Georgia on December 12, 1811. He brought with him two families of slaves, who he named "Forsyth's Family" because they were managed by Captain Forsyth until his death in 1812 when they were sold to Andrew Johnson for $2 per head (the price at which one could purchase a slave). The first house built in what is now Bainbridge County was located on the site of present day Kannapolis and was erected about 1817 by John Elderkin who had married Jane Childress from Cherokee Parish, Louisiana (a few miles west of present day Gainesville). In 1835 Gideon Pease built a cabin near where the modern courthouse stands and it remains as the oldest structure still standing in Bainbridge today. It constitutes part of the permanent historical core of town that has been preserved ever since despite repeated moves throughout its history due largely to development pressures within adjacent communities over the years. In 1861 then-Governor Alexander Stephens issued an executive order calling for all white male citizens between 15 and 45 years old to leave any Confederate forces or their property within five miles of any state capital including Athens or Atlanta before May 1st 1861 or be arrested and jailed while supplies last; this order effectively ended Reconstruction in Georgia and led to mass departures from the state by black Georgians seeking political stability under new leaderships elsewhere across America following Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation January 1st 1865 effective March 4th 1865. Most whites remaining behind chose exile instead - some moved westward into Arkansas Territory where slavery continued unaffected until November 20th 1865 when Arkansas became a Union State; others headed south into Spanish Florida during Reconstruction; most finally returned home during World War II when troops came ashore aboard ships Lollypop[1] ] [] [][] Many historic buildings have been lost through neglect over time but many more remain(*) extant testimony to one of America’s earliest boomtowns – an era long gone but never forgotten!
