Bainbridge is a town in Union County, Georgia, United States. The population was 971 at the 2010 census. Bainbridge is part of the Athens-Clarke Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Bainbridge was David Hatcher on October 14, 1807. He named his land after John Bainbridge, one of Englishmen who had settled in Georgia two years earlier. In 1814 James Cooksborough laid out a plan for a town on the Chattahoochee River and called it Paxfield after his father-in-law, General James Kenedy of Knoxville, Tennessee. Bainbridge started as an agricultural community but soon became an important stop on the railroad system. The townsite was platted by Jno. Fenton in 1825 and named for its founder: Captn Samuel Bainbridge (1791–1849). By 1830, over 30 homes were built and services such as mercantile stores and a post office were established. A schoolhouse was erected in 1834 but burned down three years later; however, a new building was completed in 1840 which still stands today as the community's only landmark. Among early residents were Captain John Pritchard (1788–1859), Colonel Gideon Wellman (1809–84), Major Augustus Baldwin (1819–92) and Drury Lane resident Wm Hoggart (1800–72). In 1865 Confederate troops burned most of downtown Bainbridge to prevent its capture by Union forces during the American Civil War; this event is commemorated with annual rallies against hate crimes taking place near downtown since then known as "Peaceful Robes Day". In 1870 Bainbridge annexed much of Clarke County including results from a special election held that year to determine whether or not to merge with neighboring Union County following extensive voter fraud within that county limits claimed by some members of both political parties involved therein – charges that have been repeatedly debunked ever since then even by those same individuals supposedly involved therein! Some time during or shortly before World War II another large fire destroyed much of downtown again preventing any looting or damage done thereto – this particular fire marked the first occurrence of arson within what would become known as 'The City'. Since then many changes have taken place within what has come to be known as 'The City': The annexation of adjacent Carroll County in 1961 created much more density along with growth spurred primarily by suburban housing developments outside of town limits while job opportunities have picked up considerably throughout various aspects thereof; several high profile businesses having arisen around town center location over ensuing years including Home Depot/Jiffy Lube garage complex/Kmart store opened on Main Street just east side Of I-85 just south side Of Parkway Boulevard across From Kelly's Pub & Grill - becoming Atlanta's second largest430 foottall retail development outside Of Downtown Atlanta proper - opening nearly simultaneous therewith atop newly constructed Office Park located just northeast corner Of I- 85 & Broad Street - becoming one major anchor tenant among other prominent buildings upon its initial completion comprising over 1000 residential units currently residing therein - further neighborhood redevelopment plans underway also centered around multiple light industrial properties located adjacent thereto consisting presently totaling approximately 270 acres total undeveloped lands within Town Limits itself adjoining existing small rural communities situated nearby all sought to create mixed use neighborhoods anchored principally around aforementioned employers / implicated developers / local government entities etc.; ultimately achieving desired outcome though ongoing challenges
