Bainbridge is a small town in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. Bainbridge is part of the Atlanta–Fulton metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1892 by Rear Admiral John A. Bainbridge and his family as a small outpost on the Chattahoochee River near modern day Decatur. By 1914, Bainbridge had a post office and three churches. The community's name comes from Commodore John A. Bainbridge's birthplace on Bainbridge Island in Scotland which he named for his father-in-law, Admiral David Dixon Churchill (1785-1864). In 1924 when Commodore John A. Bainbridge died without children to succeed him as Rear Admiral of the Navy (the first person to hold that position), his grandson Admiral Samuel Winton Bainbridge IV assumed command of the navy and designated himself "Commodore John A." At that time, Commodore John A.'s widow changed her name to Lady Mary Caulfield Stevenson (1873-1947). Lady Mary succeeded her husband when he died in 1944; she continued to live there until her death two years later in 1949. In 1951, Governor Blanche Knebel proposed creating a city within our state of Georgia as an alternative to Athens because of its lack of development opportunities around it during that time period; however no action was ever taken due to strong objections from Athens mayor George Wallace who felt that such an action would compete with him politically for minority vote blocs within the state government while he enjoyed bipartisan support across all levels of government statewide . In 1985 when then Mayor Lester Maddox announced plans for redevelopment outside of Athens throughAtlanta Properties LLC spearheaded by then Mayor Don Imus & Associates[1], much discussion ensued about what type or even if any developments could take place within reach/sight but nothing materialized until after Imus' departure from office in 1995 amidst allegations[2] regarding personal financial gain being derived from city contracts while he held office[3]. On January 25th 1998Following several months long negotiations led by Assistant City Manager Jeffery Lunsford with Atlanta Properties LLC president Harry Hirschman,[4], [5] [6][7][8] finally upon signing 3 letters(properties were not included)[9][10][11] property developers agreed to build 500 homes on 15 acres northeasterly side Of downtown Atlanta between Peachtree Street & Ponce de Leon Avenue across from Philips Arena - one block east of current day Regency Ballroom - under one canopy tent dubbed “GAS’S 600 Villas” development will provide up to 400 jobs direct competitive wages will provide affordable housing
