Bainbridge, Georgia is a small town located in Decatur County, Georgia. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Bainbridge is one of the oldest communities in Decatur County and was founded by Methodists on December 26, 1814. Bainbridge is named after James Bainbridge who served as a captain in the U.S. military during the War of 1812. Located on the Suwanee River, Bainbridge has been known for its white oak trees and rich history since it first settlers arrived in 1814. The village of Bainbridge was organized on December 26, 1814 from parts of what are now Wheelerville and Knob Hill townships in Decatur County by Rev. Drury and Mr. Snively with advice from General William Troup about convenient points to build themselves outposts along the Suwanee River as a means of security against possible Creek attacks on their settlements southward along that stream (Bainbridge Gazetteer 2: 243-244). The first settler to arrive at Bainbridge was Captains James Bainbridge and Asa Gray who built a cabin there on January 10, 1815 (ibid.). In April of that year Captain Benjamin Farragut attacked Fort Moultrie at Savannah while he was serving as Commodore under Admiral David Vincennes and lost many men including Captaining Farragut himself; this event led to Commodore Farragut's decision not to pursue any further engagements during his tour in the Gulf Coast region (Galloway 1990: 158). At some point between October 15th1817 when General Andrew Pickens burned Mobile Bay forts according to Epps’ historical report cannon shots could be heard overlying our settlement returning fire every third night during my stay here (Epps 1830), 1775-1824 when Indian hostilities ceased following Treaty of Muskogee; but no one seems to have ever found out exactly when or how they happened the shot seem more like an accident than anything else In December 1840 Mrs Jane Willson settled near present day Watkins Mill which later became known as Shepsworth Village due to her donation of land there By 1850 only 8 people lived in Bainbridge with most residents coming downriver each winter working upstream on cotton plantations owned by Major John Capps & others (Hervey 1980: 167). By 1860 only 5 people remained living within town limits according to Hervey with most residents moving away each winter for work on riverboats or upriver farming cotton plantations However some residents did remain until 1865 when all inhabitants were forced move due to Union occupation Many abandoned homes still stand today such as Mrs Jane Willson's old house which she donated land for use as a schoolhouse although it never opened because the community had no money available for renovation or reconstruction
