Bainbridge is a small town located in the Putnam County, Georgia, United States. Bainbridge was founded in 1821 by James Bainbridge and his family. The town grew quickly due to the development of its shipping industry. In 1895, Bainbridge became a county seat and was renamed for John A. Bainbridge, who had served as governor of Georgia from 1893-1896. The population of Bainbridge peaked at around 507 in 1910 but declined gradually over the next few decades. Today, the population of Bainbridge is only about 20 people. The early history of Bainbridge can be traced back to 1821 when James BAIBLIADE and his family settled on a farm in Putnam County, Georgia after departing England for America with their cattle and goods following the Napoleonic Wars. The BAIBLIADES were soon successful in starting their own business exporting agricultural produce from their farmstead near what is now known as downtown Gainesville,Georgia (near present day US Highway 32). By 1825 they had built a large log cabin on what is now known as Main Street which they named "Bainbridge". They remained here until 1829 when they moved to their current location on nearby Canine Creek where they continued farming and shipping products until 1840 when they sold their land to some settlers including Gouverneur CRAWFORD III who established an ironworks here which produced rails for transportation across the Atlantic Ocean into Liverpool Market before being shipped off to Britain where they were used to create cannons/guns or other munitions; this process helped make Gainesville one of America's leading industrial cities during the 19th century! Although it would not become a full-time local government until 1892 when it was merged with neighboring Putnam County,GA under Governor John A. BARNBELL'S administration – Bainbridge did enjoy some degree of self-government up until that point; this was due largely to James BAILYARD's efforts as Mayor from 1865-1887 who spearheaded several civic projects such as construction of a new courthouse (now portions of Piedmont Park), enlarging existing buildings on Academy Street (now downtown Gainesville) – all while also working diligently behind the scenes in order to ensure efficient governance within his community; notably through developing legislation related to public education (the first such measure passed by any Georgia regional legislature), economic development (promoting agricultural production through various measures like import tariffs), infrastructure developments (such as foundingof an express mail service between Gainesville and Atlanta) & annexation by neighboring Putnam County since 1798 [when it was granted township status] – all while maintaining cordial relations with both neighbors & state legislators! These initiatives led GA Governor JAMES BARNBIRDto proclaim "Bainbridges long record shows sterling character" upon its incorporation into GA in 1895!!! In 1896 John A BAIBLIDE Sr.,John A Jr.,James H BAILYARD II & others founded what would eventually becomeknown as pecan Growers Cooperative Company Limited Partnership which exported pecans from rural areas throughout eastern North Carolina thru thier mills at Corinth Mills near Stillwater TN (& later Chattanooga TN) @ $2 per bushel - becoming one of America’s most successful exports during this time period thanks largely theretofore solely reliance upon domestic sources!! This cooperative spawned numerous similar ventures over ensuing years (@ many still extant today)). Unfortunately due primarily tho’ lack thereof marketing skills typified by early pioneers themselves – these enterprises failed miserably amidst operating expenses averaging $10/bushel vs.$2/bushel enjoyed by predecessors notwithstanding !! Only 2 out OF 102 members remain affiliated w / company today!! Incidentally today’s holdings include 6+ acres surrounding mill complex @ 23rd St NW corner Bryant Ave #AECOM); largest remaining piece remains Mill Complex itself however!!!!!!!!!
Bainbridge was founded in 1851 by J.C. Bainbridge and his wife, Martha. The town became a cotton plantation center due to its proximity to the silk mills of Augusta, Georgia. In 1905, Bainbridge was incorporated as a city.
