Augusta, Georgia is a small town in the state of Georgia. The population was 5,824 at the 2010 census. It is located in Greene County. Augusta is home to the Augusta State University and the Augusta International Raceway. The community was founded in 1851 as a small frontier village on the edge of present-day Augusta, Georgia. The first settler in what would become Augusta was James Auld who arrived with his family in 1851 from Scotland. In 1852, General Andrew Johnson visited the area and recommended that settlers erect a fence around their new settlement to prevent Indians from raids. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in what would become Augusta. By 1865, there were 300 residents and by 1870, there were 400 residents. In 1886, work began on building the first courthouse which was completed in 1888. In 1951, Governor Strom Thurmond announced that he would build an International Raceway within 120 miles of Athens to increase economic opportunities for south Fulton County and provide jobs for local citizens. The racetrack opened in 1957 and became one of the most successful track facilities ever built with a total purse of $5 million dollars awarded it during its inaugural season including five championships by drivers such as Al Unser Jr., Jackie Stewart, Donnie Allison and Joe Gibbs Sr.. Over time however problems emerged with management including financial irregularities; allegations of bribery; sexual harassment; race relations; and labor unrest among employees which eventually led to its closure in 2003 citing multiple reasons including lack of funding while also highlighting concerns about safety issues at the facility caused by inadequate signage and other deficiencies throughout adjacent neighborhoods adjacent to track operations making it unsafe for both drivers and spectators alike). In 2013 construction began on a new $100 million dollar mixed use development called "Archetype" project spanning 3 blocks across two levels consisting of office/residential/entertainment space as well as apartments/homes overlooking Race Track Boulevard & Macon Street culminating with an outdoor arena seating up to 800 people which will be used for events such as concerts & sporting events etc.; this project should bring much needed life back into downtown Augusta allowing for more retail & restaurant openings along with more street parking Lot's being established surrounding Race Track Boulevard creating even more pedestrian traffic spineing down Macon Street towards downtown providing much needed public transportation access between all parts of town
