The first European settler was Baptist preacher George Washington who came overland from Savannah with his party on July 4, 1785; he named this spot "Augusta" after his patron goddess Athena (not related to Athens). In 1801–02 Major General James Wilkinson founded what is now known as Wilkinson's Landing on Catawba River east of modern day downtown Augusta where he established Fort Walton which served as a supply depot for American forces fighting against Native Americans during the Seminole War (1819-1822). During Reconstruction following Reconstruction efforts by white supremacists order by President Andrew Johnson began; sections of town west of Broad Street were burned down including all vestiges remaining today of that time period's organized crime operations called "the White Nights". This area today contains most heavily populated neighborhoods within walking distance or just minutes' drive from nearly all shops and restaurants located within blockswalking distance or less than one mile from almost every major highway exit in town center including I-95/I-285 exits Rt 1 & 2A & 3B & 4A

Cobb in 1824 as a post office called "Cobb's Station". The first courthouse in Augusta was built on Pryor Street between First and Second Streets in 1827. The present courthouse was built around 1935 and designed by architectship of Jules Grosvenor and Henry John Chatham. It has been used as the county courthouse since 1957. Augusta also contains several interesting historical sites including: The Savannah & Western Railroad Depot (c 1887), which served as the railroad station from which trains transported goods to and from Savannah until it closed in 1960; The Confederate General Robert Ewell's Headquarters (1886), located on Court House Square; and The restored African American Episcopal Church (1892) located on West Ashley Avenue across from the old courthouse.
The first settlers in Augusta were the Muscogee Creek Indians. The area was purchased by Georgia in 1733 and divided into three counties: Chattahoochee, Inland, and Paulding. In 1802, Augusta became a city and was named for General James Wilkinson.
