Augusta, Georgia is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 21,813 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County. The city was founded on December 22, 1802 by General Andrew Jackson as West Point on the west bank of the Chattahoochee River. The original town site was located on a bluff overlooking the river and consisted of about 120 acres (49 hectares). On July 8, 1803, Jackson ordered that all land east of the river be surveyed and sold to develop new townships in order to support military infrastructure and construction projects along the riverfront. The first town developed in what is now Augusta was called Eastpointe. Eastpointe consisted of about 100 acres (41 hectares). On January 3, 1805, General James Moultrie burned down Eastpointe so that its inhabitants could not rebuild it without Federal help. In 1806-07 Colonel John Fenton surveyed and laid out a new town site on current day Fort Mason which became known as Augusta after him. In November 1810 when President James Kenedy arrived in Athens he made an inspection tour of all U.S.-owned land north of Constitution Avenue including Fort Mason and discovered what would become Augusta had been undeveloped for over two decades due to lack of interest from investors or developers because Atlanta had rapidly expanded southward into central Georgia since 1795 when Congress passed the Indian Removal Act which led to the displacement and expulsion of most Native American tribes in southern Georgia. Kenedy recommended that Savannah take over ownership and development responsibility for Fort Mason so that it could become an important commercial center between Savannah and Rome while also providing defense against British incursions into southeastern Alabama during this time period; this recommendation was accepted by Secretaryof War John Quincy Adams who assigned Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest with responsibility for developing Fort Mason into an important military installation within Savannah until such time as Savannah could build her own fortifications around it protecting its interests against British incursions into southeastern Alabama during this time period; these plans were eventually realized with construction beginning in late 1830s under general orders from President James Kenedy starting on May 1st followed by establishment of permanent garrison on October 17th 1830 During Reconstruction following the Civil War many African Americans began working as laborers or slaves in various white households acrossGeorgia before being brought over toGA permanently by Free Blacks who were definately emancipated prior to statehood Augusta experienced rapid growth following World War II with thousands arriving seeking jobs available postwar due largely to GI Bill programs which helped veterans find employment
