A group of African Americans called Battle Creek Boardwalk Citizens League unsuccessfully attempted to block white troops from entering town at night while supplies were being unloaded fromsteamboats moored at battle creek dockyard; this led to further violence that left four men dead and twenty-one wounded including several members of the boardwalk Citizens League. This event forever changed Augusta's history as one night's altercation turned into years-long conflict that caused irreparable damage both to downtown Athenians' social fabric and economy

Augusta, Georgia is a town in Troup County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,817 at the 2010 census. Augusta is the capital of Troup County and the seat of government for all of Troup County. It is also the commercial center for the county. Augusta is located in east-central Georgia on I-95 just south of Atlanta. The first settlement in what is now Augusta was made by James Robertson in 1785 as a trading post on his exploration into what would become Cobb County. The first permanent settler in Augusta was David Porter who arrived from North Carolina in 1811 and built a small cabin on the riverbank near where Interstate 95 now intersects with State Route 516 (Old US 30). This location became known as "Porter's Ferry" because it served as an important stop on Porter's journey between Athens and Savannah. In 1813, General Andrew Jackson founded Fort Pulaski at present day Pulaski Road and River Settlement Creek to protect settlers from Seminole Indian attacks during the War of 1812. In 1830, Governor William Hogg ordered Colonel John Pemberton to establish a military post at what is today downtown Augusta to defend against slave raids byabolitionist raiders called "the Creek Nation." Colonel Pemberton chose this site because it offered excellent grazing land for his horses and deer hunting opportunities that did not cover by nearby plantations. When slavery was abolished in Georgia in 1865, most white Georgians left for other states within a few years after that date; however, many black Georgians continued to live here until after World War II when they were brought back into effect through various legal measures such as registering with local officials or being given voting rights via registration drives conducted by state governments or private organizations like CORE ( Citizens' Revolutionary Education and Voter Registration). Many businesses have been established here since then including several restaurants and stores which have attracted residents from throughout southeast Georgia while also serving as critical economic engines driving growth throughout Troup County over time.

The town was established on the River Stono, about 12 miles west of Savannah. The first white settler in Augusta was John McIntosh, who arrived in 1768. In 1772, the British burned down the courthouse and most of the town to destroy evidence of their rebellion against English rule. In 1802, Augusta became an incorporated city with a population of around 100 people. It lost its status as a city in 1835 when it merged with Savannah.
