When Augusta, Georgia became the capital of the Confederacy in 1861, its citizens were among the most ardent supporters of secession from the Union. The city had been founded on a bluff overlooking Mobile Bay and was an important port for Confederate munitions shipments. In addition, many Augustaians owned firearms, which they used to cook and shoot during the guerrilla warfare that characterized much of the war. The city's first gunsmith was James Proctor, who opened his business in 1814. Over time, Proctor's shop became one of the most popular in Augusta for repairs and custom work on firearms. His son John also operated a successful gunsmithing business until his death in 1876. One of Proctor's sons-in-law, Solomon Northup, also became well-known for his expertise in firearm repair and customization. In 1862, pro-Union sentiment rose across all of Georgia as Confederate forces began marching into neighboring states to try and overthrow Union rule. At this point, many Augustaians decided it was time to arm themselves and join their compatriots in support of their own government. Many residents turned to local blacksmiths and jewelers to find suitable firearms fittings for their new arsenals. This process began early enough that some rifles even bore model numbers (e.g., "4th Regiment Va.) rather than common unit numerals like 1st or 3rd Infantry Regiment." EARLY GUNS IN AUGUSTA: While there is no documentary evidence to support it outright, some believe that early guns found throughout Augusta may have been sourced from nearby Savannah or Brunswick County Gun Shops run by white men working with blacksmiths resident within town limits! Additionally these shops did not exist simultaneously as several individuals took over various roles within weeks/months after initial establishment! So while we cannot be 100% certain - what we can say with certainty is that shortly before secession occurred many locals were turning towards arms ownership as a means to further protect themselves against perceived federal aggression!!

Augusta, Georgia is a small town in the Appalachian Mountains of central Georgia. The population was 7,577 at the 2010 census, making it the ninth most populous town in Fulton County. Augusta is located on State Route 670, about 15 miles northwest of Atlanta. The town was founded in 1819 by General James Wilkinson as an outpost on what is now known as Old Atlanta Road. In 1825, Wilkinson and his family moved to Augusta from Savannah and began to develop the community into a commercial center with plantations and farms behind it. The first post office opened in 1826, and by 1830 Augusta had become a major cotton-growing center. In 1845, General John Young organized the First Confederate Infantry Regiment from former white slaves in Augusta. Afterward, many African Americans served in local militaries or businesses throughout the antebellum period until ending slavery after their own emancipation efforts failed. Many of these people are buried at Mount Zion Cemetery east of downtown Augusta. In 1923 bulldozers leveled part of downtown for construction of Interstate 95; however, this did not detract from its importance as a commercial center during much of the 20th century because most business activity took place along Market Street outside the I-95 interchangeMAX station (now Turner Field). When Interstate 95 was completed in 1965 and concurrent with new roadbuilding projects across Fulton County including Highway 770 (laterSR 770), Downtown Augusta became more isolated than ever before with few businesses able to survive within walking distance of one another despite attempts over time to revive some aspects of its history like folk music concerts held at Centennial Park near present day Cumberland Mall which have been successful each year since 2007 but were recently cancelled due to low attendance numbers Downtown Augusta experienced significant gentrification beginning around 2000 when larger developers bought up propertiesoorchasing distressed neighborhoods which led to increased traffic congestion on Market Street resulting in less opportunity for pedestrians and cyclists who use that corridor for daily transportation options due also to increasing housing prices adjacent to Interstate 95 . This has resulted in injuries or fatalities among children playing on Public sidewalks adjacentto I-95
