After the war ended, many Reconstruction policies were put into place including racial segregation in certain areas of town while white residents continued to own most of the homes and businesses. Since its founding as a small town, Augusta has seen growth both economically and politically. Today it is one of Georgia's largest cities with a population of over 200,000 people – making it one of its most diverse metropolitan areas.
