The history of ammunition in Augusta, Georgia started with the early 1800s. The first firearms in Augusta were pistols and rifles. In 1827, a Gunsmith shop was built on Market Street. Ammunition was manufactured there for the use of the residents of Augusta. In 1845, Colonel Augustus Chapman purchased land at the intersection of Market and High Streets and founded the town of Chapmanville. Ammunition production began here and continued until 1870 when it was moved to new facilities in nearby Knox County. In 1898, an additional Gunsmith shop was added to the original building on Market Street, which still stands today as a museum dedicated to ammunition history. Throughout its history, Augusta has been a center for manufacturing ammunition. Today, the city is home to several large munitions manufacturers including ATK Ammunition Company (formerly known as ATK Manufacturing), Hughes Ammunition Co., Winchester Repeating Arms Company (Winchester), and Browning Firearms Corporation (Browning).

He also helped to revive the economy by founding several small businesses along with building several churches in downtown Augusta during this time period

It became a city in 1909. Augusta is the county seat of Muscogee County. The area that now Augusta was first settled by Creek Indians in 1795 and claimed for Georgia by James McMillan on February 10, 1819 as part of the treaty negotiated between American and Creek leaders at Fort Moultrie with British forces under Major-General Andrew Jackson. Afterward, many McIntosh/Randolph families moved to this area from North Carolina during the antebellum period because of its strategic location midway between Chattanooga and Atlanta. In 1836, when Alabama seceded from the Union, General George Custer's cavalry unit camped around Augusta on May 15–16 outside what is now downtown Augusta while he reconnoitered for an attempt to cross the Tennessee River into southern Alabama without resistance or opposition from Confederate forces entrenched along its banks. On July 5th General Custer's command discovered an overwhelming Confederate force led by General Robert E Lee near Missionary Ridge seventy miles (113 km) southeast of Chattanooga where he decided not to proceed any further upstream but instead retreat back across the Tennessee River to safety at Demon Valley Junction just west of Knoxville beforeATTLE commenced battle which resulted in over 200 casualties on both sides with only 12 Americans captured including Civil War hero Ulysses S Grant who had been leading a reconnaissance column nearby trying to assess battlefield conditions). Aftermath: In 1837 Captain John Smith traveled through southeastern Alabama upon hearing rumors of Indian activity near present day Augusta; He learned that there were several thousand Creeks living among them who did not recognize American rule and were then engaged in raiding white settlements throughout central and eastern Georgia; Captain Smith reported this information to militia leader Major Starkweather southwest of Atlanta who ordered Thomas Loydston’s battalion (the 2nd Infantry Regiment) under Lieutenant Colonel George Hartsfield (1st Infantry Regiment) – commanded by future Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest - march onto Cherokee Lands northeast of Savannah seeking revenge against their Creek enemies Forrest organized two companies of infantrymen from Lawrence County Militia company A under First Lieutenant John Gregg (2nd Battalion), Lieutenant William Broughton (3rd Battalion), Second Lieutenant Ebenezer Cooksey(4th Battalion) – each battalion composed four companies totaling 100 militiamen numbering about 3200 men strong; march east on June 26th intersecting with captain Smith’s expedition south towards our current site northwest of downtown Athens; arrived here about sunset June 26th after traveling for eight days); Captain John Smith knew that if he proceeded south he would come into contact with Federal troops manned by Brigadier General Samuel Jumper’s brigade consisting mostly artillery batteries operating outfitted with ironclad warships protecting Mobile Bayou beyond our present limits thus resulting in inevitable Battle? With knowledge that they would be met militarily rather than peaceably it seems likely that Captain Smith chose wisely when turning north instead continuing downriver past modern day Athens towards what is today known as Pumpkin Point approximately 8 miles due east Of Downtown Augusta; arrived here about sunset following journey lasting six days).
