After hunting here with his brother-in-law George Rogers Clark during their exploration of what would become Georgia in 1765–67, Cherokee Chief Etowah led an attack against American settlers near what is now downtown Athens on July 9th, 1795 – one day after American forces arrived in response to Cherokee raids along the Tennessee border two weeks earlier! This event marked beginning of American efforts to protect Indian land from British encroachment across newly acquired territory following victory over Great Britain at Yorktown! The first permanent white living quarters were erected here along State Street within days of this attack which also included construction of government buildings such as Governor's House/Senate Chamber still standing today! However small formalities at first concerned about potential conflict with Creek Indians who already inhabited much wider portions throughout then nascent Georgia settlements - including some 3 miles eastward downriver at Stono Ferry! With Opelousas being destroyed by fire just downstream due to faulty arsonist miscalculation while burning Boardwalk furniture stored there en route back up river to New Orleans early morning Aug 1st only weeks prior!! So much for European Arrivals bringing civilization & lots more trade items Along this vital waterway…& Opelousa’s Market soon filled with Choctaw traders selling all manner Of trash produce hardware obsidian mirrors Pakalnate pendants necklaces knives etc etc!! Olaudah Equiano notes “It appears that our forefathers did not build too high expectations when they came here; they could have done better than this……Their intentions were good but their abilities were not great” !!! In 1801 , A bill authorizing creation of US states west of Ohio was passed by Congress; however no action taken until May 15th Virginia Rep John Marshall sent delegation asking President Adams if he might issue order appointing him commissioner general for western territories? Adams responded “I do not think I should appoint myself a Commissioner General for any Territory beyond those lines which are now under my control” !!! On July 8th 1800 , Jefferson Davis wrote to Arthur Ashe expressing interest in becoming United States Attorney General under new Constitution provisions allowing presidentially appointed officials “to prosecute prosecutions chartered pursuant to law”? Ashe replied “I am sorry but I cannot see how I can be induced [to serve] under your arrangements without office or salary….You will find that my talents lie elsewhere Mr President” !!! With no other suitable candidates emerging from nomination process announced on August 10th 1800 , Davis nominated James Kroupa instead??? Why???? Because Kroupa had worked previously for Davis & knew both he & Jefferson wanted Kroupa confirmed ??? proves again Jefferson Davis really does have bladder issues like many people say he does !!

Finally, after more than 100 years of growth and development – both good AND bad – Athens come down hard times in the late 20th century when most everything went out of style (save for some architecture). But with help from new developers/investors things are slowly starting to improve once again... A Brief History Of Athen’s Timber Industry It has been said that what makes an old city is its ability “to forget about yesterday’s problems so that today’s issues can be confronted head on!” In this case it would appear that Athens saw much pain throughout its history due largely theretofore unnoticed problems like racism & classism which still continue unabated today….. however through cooperation among different groups together they have managed successfully overcome these odds….. [1] For example; prioritiz[ing] public services above private interests (in contrast Ancient Greece only prioritized self-promotion)…. [2] Resulting in less chronic inflammation & better overall health—thus promoting cultural diversity instead!!
On July 8, 1828, Athens, Georgia was founded as the capital of the Cherokee Nation. The city was named after King George III of England and Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, who presided over a visit to the area in 1824.
