The city of Athens, Georgia was founded in 1795 by a group of British settlers. The town grew quickly and soon became a center of trade and culture. In 1804, the United States acquired control of Georgia and Athens became its capital. The city played an important role in the development of American democracy and the country's First Amendment to the US Constitution. Athletic teams from Athens began playing organized football in 1892. The city's first soccer team, the Athletic Club, played its first game in 1893. In 1906, Athens was admitted to the Georgia League and participated for the first time in an official championship game against Milledgeville. The club lost that game 5–0. In 1912, Athens joined the newly formed American Football Association (AFA). The AFA would later become the National Football League (NFL). In 1920, Athens became a charter member of the NFL and played its first NFL regular season game versus Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles would hold a 26-14 halftime lead before trailing 34-7 at halftime; however, Athens rallied to win 44-24 with future Pro Bowl linebacker Lou Groza as their quarterback. After World War II ended hostilities in Europe and there were no more major league professional football leagues active throughout most of America, Athens applied to join both the AFL and NFL but were turned down each time. With only one year remaining in their original AFL membership (1946), they rejoined the NFL as an expansion team under new ownership which included former New York Giants owner John Dutton Jr.; however, they finished last in their inaugural season and did not play again until 1956 when they reached Super Bowl XVI where they lost 43-10 to Dallas Cowboys
