The first rifle magazine in Athens was the Patriot Armory which was established in 1814. The second rifle magazine in Athens was the Arsenal of Atlanta which opened its doors on December 2, 1816. This publication offered rifles, pistols and ammunition to civilians and soldiers alike. The Patriot Armory closed its doors for good in 1818 but there are reports that it reopened soon after as a gunsmith shop. It is unknown when or how this new incarnation became known as the Patriot Armory Magazine but it is likely that it did so because of its affiliation with the patriot movement during the antebellum period. In 1821, another patriot organization, the United States Colored Troops (USCT), began using the Patriot Armory as their national headquarters. USCT used this space for storage and training purposes until 1830 when they moved to a more permanent location at Fourth Street and State Street. In 1830, gunfire erupted outside of Congress Hall where a meeting of United States Colored Troops had been scheduled. Confederate forces responded by opening fire on what they assumed were black military aides who had come to attend congressional proceedings. One white man died and several others were injured; however no one ever knew for sure who fired those gunshots or why! A group of white men led by Captain John Pemberton stormed Congress Hall and arrested all of those responsible for firing uponthe colored troops- an event that has been mythologized throughout history!
