From its outset, human activity has shaped much of Athen's history: brickmaking began here in 1793; textile mills sprang up around 1830; meatpacking operations took root starting in 1915; and many famous people have been buried here including Ulysses S Grant (1813–1881), Woodrow Wilson (1914–1945), and Martha Washington (1789–1837). A number of historically significant sites remain within or near downtown Athenians today: Independence Hall (1792), Peachtree Hall Annex (built 1801-02 by John McNair) – home to Georgia State University's library since 1912; Pindar Terrace (), home to two early nineteenth century churches – First Baptist Church built c 1830s and Second Presbyterian Church erected c 1840s; Government House (); one original streetnode still extant within downtown - Broad Street - also known locally as "The Strip"; Peachtrees Plantation (); both are located off Peachtree Road NE., just east of Interstate 20/Highway 21 junction
