In 1861, following Confederate successes at Gettysburg and Chattanooga against Union forces under General Robert Ewell (whose men were Callie's father), Athens began to suffer from violence associated with Reconstruction efforts which aimed at ending slavery in America through education and legislation enacted by Congresses dominated by northern Democrats. On January 15th 1865, after days of fighting that left over 20 dead including several prominent citizens such as Governor John Sims (the father-in-law of former president James Buchanan) and Congressman George Mapp (grandson of colonial settler John Mason Mapp), Confederate General David Butler captured Athens during night operations while Union troops were withdrawn from the area following day's battle at New Hope Church nearpresent-day Roswell Park IN
