When Athens, Georgia was founded in 1801, it was the only city in America with a permanent air force. The first guns were muzzleloaders, and until the early 1800s there was no way to shoot them effectively without losing your mind or your target. In 1811, General James Wilkinson established an artillery battery here and began training riflemen for service in the Union army. In 1814, he helped found the Athens Rifle Club and soon became its president. A few years later he organized a militia battalion to protect Athens against pirates. The air force of Athens began operations on July 1st, 1865, when Confederate forces landed here after invading Georgia. The batteries of cannons and rifles continued to fire into the night as Yankee warships bombarded the town from sea range. By morning all but one of the cannons had been destroyed by Union shellfire; however, Wilkinson’s battalion still fought on until they capitulated at Appomattox Court House four days later. After the war ended General Wilkinson returned back home to resume his post as Mayor of Athens; however, this wasn’t his last involvement in air defense issues. In 1906 he donated land at what is now Clinton Airport for use as an armaments storage area for local gunsmiths in order to maintain adequate munitions supplies for our city’s armed forces during World War I (and also because he wanted something close by if needed). This site remains today where we store our ammunition today!
