In 1861, during Confederate service in the American Civil War, Americus was burned by Union forces under General Robert E. Lee as part of a strategic move to disrupt supplies reaching Confederate forces camped near Dahlonega on the Chattahoochee River. The town was rebuilt quickly and became one of Savannah's most popular tourist destinations during Reconstruction; however, it experienced another resurgence following passage in 1978 of the Americans With Disabilities Act which helped makeamericas accessible to everyone regardlessof race or handicap

In 1802, Captain James Cook discovered America east of Brasstown Creek on July 4th when his ship HMS Bounty sailed past latitude 29 degrees north latitude while en route from Tahiti to England with specimens collected by Captain William Bligh during his circumnavigation of Australia 2 years earlier. A group led by Commodore John Steedman decided to make contact with this new landmass and founded the village that summer as a staging ground for their journey westward across North America or “the Great Awakening” as it became known among Europeans at that time. The first permanent European settlement officialized by Georgia was at Grantsville which met approval from Governor Blount on December 12th 1802 following an arduous application process including inspection by Indian scouts under Captains Thomas Brownell & David Thompson aboard HMS Beaumaris (later HMAS Melbourne). Grantsville later served as the county seat until 1835 when Athens took over that role pursuant to statehood legislation ratified May 15th 1837. During much of its early history Atlantans lived within two miles or less of each other so daily transactions were common between farmer/citizens/ merchants etc., enabling close personal interaction which fostered social cohesion thru gossip & storytelling; accounts remain largely unbroken today After reaching Acworth about 1830 some began moving out further into Cobb County; essentially all original Atlantans living eastof Fort Payne moved out before 1840 . Chattahoochee River valley remained relatively unpopulated until central Cobb area developed around 1880-1890 . This period is generally called “Old South” era followed by Jim Crow era
