Grant's first Secretary of War after he took office in 1869. After the American Civil War ended, Americus prospered as a cotton mill town until it lost its status when cotton prices collapsed during the Great Depression. In 1980 it regained its status as an agricultural center with slave labor being used to produce corn for America's food supply until 2005 when all land ceased to be cultivated and became parkland

Americus is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County. The name Americus comes from the Creek word Airmonta, meaning "place of many springs". In 1802, surveyor James Robertson map named the town after Colonel John Americus (1754-1827), an officer in General Andrew Jackson's army during the American Revolution and later a member of Congress from Georgia. In 1828, Col. John Americus' widow petitioned for permission to name her husband's hometown after him but no action was taken on her behalf until 1892 when she again lobbied for recognition and permission to change the name to Americus. On November 15th of that year by popular vote with over 60% in favor of changing it to Americus as requested by Mrs.Americus herself; the town became officially called Americus by ordinance on December 3rd, 1992. The first post office opened in 1865 and remained open until 1907; however due to lack of customers or mail service being available most times during those years it was closed twice only for brief periods of time before reopening again under different management including one term as a general store then back as a post office until 1978 when it closed completely due to bankruptcy proceedings which led to its closure once again making it America's oldest post office still operational today! The present day downtown area was built up largely through economic development during the late 1800s with cotton production accounting for much of that growth while also attracting industrialists and entrepreneurs who founded businesses such as IBM, Coca Cola & Chrysler Corporation among others within what is now known as AfricUS Incorporated (formerly known as The Georgian Company). Today AfricUS has multiple properties throughout downtown including an arts center/theatre/museum complex along with several restaurants/bars which continue providing quality evening entertainment year round while also hosting numerous community events throughout both summertime and wintertime like Rudolph's Night Out where classic rock concerts are headlined nightly!
