Americus is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Americus was founded by Captain James Shields in 1795. The town became a U.S. military post during the American Revolution and then a center for cotton production after the war. Americus has a rich history that can be traced back to its founding date of December 5, 1795 by Captain James Shields and his men on what is now State Route 2 north of downtown Americus. At first, Shield's men built their homes from logs they collected from along the Chattahoochee River and hunted game near their home base on Lake Lanier Island off of Georgian Bayou (present-day Interstate 285). In 1802, when Congress created the U.S.–Mexico War Zone across much of central Georgia, Americus came under Mexican influence as an Ulysses S Grant strategic reserve post on US 441 south of present day Sidmouth Road and west of present day Highway 20 (now US Hwy 411). When hostilities ended in 1848, America's new president Fillmore designated Americus as an official seat of government within newly organized Georgia Territory following Britain's withdrawal from that region at independence in 1814. After several years as an unincorporated community outside of Fulton County due to jurisdictional issues between Atlantans and Georgians over land purchases by both groups during Reconstruction, Americus officially became a consolidated city with charter dates January 1st 1865 through November 3rd 1865 - just four days before Atlanta was placed within Fulton County limits subject to all county ordinances pertaining thereto including=- municipal meetings; electioneering; property taxes; animal feeding ordinance; fire insurance regulations

It is located on the east side of the state and borders Montgomery County to the south and west. The town was founded by General James Auchinleck in 1802 as a military post on what is now Westside Highway and Old Peachtree Road. After being burned down by Native Americans in 1804, Auchinleck rebuilt it as a small farming community with homes made from logs that were brought overland from Alabama. The first school was built in 1807 and the first store opened in 1811. In 1826, Americaus became an incorporated village with a Board of Trustees, which also provided for fire protection, streetlights, voting rights, education (through academies), parks and public works projects such as roads and bridges. In 1840, Americus became one of two towns in Georgia to be created from parts of two other towns – Greenville and Decatur – when Athens divided its county into three sections based on population growth rates. By 1850, however, Americus had declined so much due to cotton cultivation that it reverted back to being just a rural outpost until 1862 when Confederate Gen'l Robert Ewell invaded Georgia looking for supplies for his army duringthe American Civil War. When Union forces arrived at Americus he abandoned it without battle after retreating back across South Carolina river because he knew Atlanta would be taken without any resistance if he attacked within Confederate territory
