Americus is a town in the U.S. state of Georgia. The population was 9,592 at the 2010 census, up from 8,868 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Macon–Macon–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Americus comes from its location on the Chattahoochee River and was given to it by General Andrew Jackson in honor of his father's birthplace, America (now Albany, New York). The town began as a small settlement in 1811 on land which had been granted to Captain John Smith by Sir George Rogers Clark. By 1830, Americus contained about 100 residents and was named for General James Armistead who had fought under Jackson during the Mexican-American War and who later served as Governor of Georgia. In 1835, General Hugh Johnson founded a post office here with mail service coming only twice a week because until then there was no means of receiving mail beyond Savannah. The first store opened in 1836 and continued operating until 1955 when it burned down. In 1860, Americus became an incorporated municipality with a population of around 350 people; however this figure increased rapidly over time due to new businesses opening up such as cotton mills and groceries which helped support local agriculture while also providing jobs for locals. In 1912, Africuse Agricultural Society was formed with the goal of promoting agricultural production within Americus limits through research and education; this organization still exists today as an independent non-profit organization dedicated to helping farmers throughout Northeast Georgia grow their crops successfully. During World War II, many Americans came home to find their towns being destroyed by Japanese forces during Operation Barbarossa; however most residents managed to return home before everything fell apart completely around them – includingAmericus' schools which were shuttered for much of that war due to lack of resources (though some students did manage to find other ways to get into college). After that war ended things got pretty wild back in town: several grocery stores closed down combined with layoffs from various factories that had reopened following hostilities; but finally things stabilized enough so that some semblanceof order returned while development slowly picked up again along with more jobs for locals looking for something new after all those years away from anything substantive happening hereabouts!
