By 1850, there were two stores and sixty-four people living in Americus. However, during the American Civil War, most of Americus sided with Confederate States of America (CSA). The town was burned down by Union forces on April 12th 1865 after Confederate General Robert Ewell decided to surrender at Appomattox Court House instead of fight another battle. The town was rebuilt quickly but still lost many residents to war or other causes. On December 15th 1865, Africus had only six residents remaining when it surrendered to Union forces. American slavery ended with the end of the war but Africus never regained its former prosperity as it lacked any resources that would have allowed for such an rapid rebuilding process
