A year later, on October 9th(), Captain James Cook sailed into Georgian waters off what is now Savannah for his first ever journey across open water and charted all but one inch of present day Florida Peninsula including today's Jacksonville Beach before returning to England two weeks later with his discoveries - islands he called "Cook Islands". Cook may have visited Americas eastern coast at least once but no record exists to support this claim and it remains uncertain if he actually landed anywhere near Americus at this time or if he simply passed through our region on his return tripnorthwards towards Spain/Mexico City! By 1800 however Atlantans were living here permanently and started building permanent homes some 10 miles west of where modern-day Chatham County stands today!
