Americus is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,853 at the 2010 census. Americus is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The name "Americus" comes from the Creek word Auchi meaning "the land that flows to the sea." American traders first came to this region in the early 17th century and began trading with European settlers. In 1805, General Andrew Jackson invaded and conquered Alabama and parts of Mississippi; as a result, this region became part of Georgia. Americus was incorporated as a town on November 15, 1810. The community grew rapidly due to its location near two large rivers: the Etowah River and Savannah River. Americus developed into a commercial center for cotton production in central Georgia during the 19th century. By 1840, Americus had become an important railroad junction and served as a major center for African Americans working in white households as sharecroppers or tenant farmers. In 1865, following Confederate defeat at Appomattox Court House, AmericaUS seceded from the Union and joined forces with other secessionist towns throughout central Georgia in what became known as The War for Southern Independence (1861-1865). After Confederate victory at Battle of Jonesboro on April 12, 1865, most of Americus relocated to Atlanta due to wartime conditions which included food shortages and rationing programs instituted by Union soldiers. During Reconstruction years (1870-1947), Americus experienced rapid growth due to new development within its limits such as education and industrialization opportunities opened up by federal funding programs under President Woodrow Wilson's New Deal initiatives.
