Clay's widow donated land near her husband's childhood home to create what would become downtown Americus; construction began in 1924 and finished nearly 20 years later . The original clay buildings still stand today along with many others built during the early days of downtown development including the Masonic Temple (1924), Coca-Cola plant (1929), American Legion Building (1930), United States Post Office (1931) and Fulton County Courthouse Annex (1974).
