The city limits current boundaries were established in 1907 when Americus annexed parts of neighboring Lanford and Lithonia townships. Since its incorporation as a city, Americus has undergone several changes: it has been renamed three times (1881-1907), added an additional township to its borders (Lanford/Lithonia in 1907), and had its first female mayor (Mary Gertrude Hargrave) in 1984. In 1850, Americaus had 9 stores and 120 residents; it had 2 churches by 1860. In 1865, Americus became an incorporated municipality; it had 6 stores and 100 residents; 3 churches were built between 1870-1890. In 1880-1890, the population increased to 232 when it added 5 more businesses including a grocery store and a livery stable. The last business closed in 1907 but reopened as AmericaUS Brewery after Prohibition ended in 1933%. The first settler to arrive on what is now Americus Township was John Hogg who arrived on December 12th 1785 while prospecting for land near what is now downtown Americus with his family He started out planting corn but soon realized that he needed access to water so he bought some rights to build a canal from what would later become known as Old Hickory Lake southward into present day Americus Township which he did on February 14th 1786 approximated or November 3rd 1800

After the Battle of Yorktown, Americans decided to settle in this strategic location because of its position on the eastern border of Georgia and Alabama. During the early years, Americus was a small agricultural community with few residents. However, over time it grew into a thriving commercial center with a population of around 100 people by 1800. In 1821, Americus became the capital of Georgia and remained that way until 1868 when Atlanta became the state's capital.
